The Genelec speakers are the crowning glory of the Royal Conservatory's new Dolby Atmos Music 7.1.4 studio.
Although the Royal Conservatory in The Hague is the oldest conservatory in the Netherlands, they are anything but old fashioned. Experiment and innovation go hand in hand with tradition and craftsmanship. They recently moved to a new building, Amare, on 't Spui in The Hague. For this new building, the Conservatory was looking for a Dolby Atmos setup in the AV Suite. The course 'Art of Sound' works extensively with Dolby Atmos Music. The Conservatory realised this setup with Genelec active monitors.
What is Dolby Atmos Music?
To clarify what we are talking about, here is a brief explanation of Dolby Atmos Music. Dolby Atmos was originally conceived for film purposes, but made its way into music in 2019. This allowed for Dolby Atmos surround sound to be experienced on streaming services as well. It offers a similar set of workflow tools as the original Atmos and enhances the music listening experience.
An advantage of Dolby Atmos Music is that it can also be experienced on headphones and certified smart speakers. The system contains of two layers that include both surround and height signals. Typical setups are 7.1.4, 9.1.4 and 9.1.6.
Setup
The Royal Conservatory chose a 7.1.4 setup. This setup includes seven monitors at working level, four on the ceiling and one sub woofer. What makes this setup special is that it offers immersive audio, providing powerful sense of envelopment and realism that brings the music to life. Proper calibration of this setup is essential to achieve the best immersive audio experience. Genelec's active monitors accomplish this using GLM-calibration software, ensuring that the immersive monitoring system is perfectly optimised for playback level, frequency response and time-of-flight.
The setup is arranges as shown in the picture above. The 8330A was chosen for surround and ceiling, which is tailored to the room's dimensions. What's unique in this is the Genelec 8341A, a Smart Active Monitor (SAM). This comes from the Genelec ONE series, which is exceptional in its kind. Conservatory staff have said that this very monitor, in particular, has been a pleasant surprise to them. Thanks to its innovative coaxial design, the ONE's exhibit exhibit the same characteristics in every direction, making them perfect for use in the Dolby Atmos setup. The highly acurate characteristics, combined with room calibration, ensures a perfect set-up and sound experience.
