Nederlands Dagblad already made podcasts together with ‘EO’ and ‘Youth opwekking’. Now they make their own podcasts that include background stories on articles and demonstrate the knowledge and skill of their own employees. Joost Bastiaans, audio business developer at Nederlands Dagblad, told us the following: “The readers of newspapers are usually a bit older. To attract a younger audience, you need to utilise cross-media work as well. Recent research shows that the average podcast listener is relatively young. Almost half of all podcast listeners are younger than 35, an audience that Nederlands Dagblad would like to address."
Nederlands Dagblad’s podcasts are now made in a brand-new studio in the Nederlands Dagblad building. An empty room has been turned into a complete studio in the span of 15 weeks!
“This was not possible without the excellent preparation, collation of equipment and interface assembly in the Triple Audio office. The calmness and expertise of the Triple Audio engineers provided the focus to ensure that the studio was finished within the set timeframe” – Joost Bastiaans
Watch the video below to see how the installation was done:
The advantage of having a studio in their own work environment is that the employees can always record a podcast or interview. It was important to Joost to make a studio that was easy to use for all employees, including nontechnical. “Some just see a heap of equipment, but it’s actually not that bad. The cables are well hidden and there is only one monitor that allows you to control the whole studio.” On this monitor you will find a user-friendly user panel, created with Pathfinder Core PRO. In this interface both the Axia iQs virtual mixer and buttons to start/stop the recording can be controlled. Because every control is accessible from a single screen, the chances of making a mistake are reduced.
The Nederlands Dagblad studio has, aside from the podcast’s host, five guest spots. The guest’s and host’s microphones receive a layer of processing from the SOUND4 BIG VOICE that’s situated in the central equipment room. Thanks to the 3-band signal path and ultrafast limiter, the BIG VOICE delivers an unnoticeable and consistent result.
Additionally, the studio can connect with foreign journalists from, for example, the Vatican, Africa, or America using the AeroAudio Bluetooth interface. When a phone is connected, you can simply call as usual to get the opinions and expertise of foreign colleagues in your podcast. Conecting in this way is extremely easy for the users. Nowadays, everyone has a wireless Bluetooth device in their house. People usually react by saying:
“Hey, I know how this works!”
As you can see in the Pathfinder user panel, users can click the button ‘Verwerk opname’. When clicked a process starts in the background. Using OmniaTools, the signature processing of Nederlands Dagblad is applied to the recording. This way the recording meets the loudness requirements of the various podcast platforms. Afterwards, the processed recording is automatically dropped into the Google Drive for all the employees to use. The user only needs to cut out little mistakes and add the pre- and end roll to the podcast. Piece of cake!
To sum up, this new podcast studio is a high-end recording studio in a user-friendly package. Wouldn’t you like to have that as well? Tell us your requirements through the contact form below and we will send you a non-binding offer.
