Vechtdal FM: from analog to digital

Vechtdal FM has opened the doors of her new studio! This local radio station now features modern and most important: digital equipment. Vechtdal FM has installed the equipment all by themselves and they also made the studio furniture. How did this course go? Jaap Snijder (technician at Vechtdal FM) tells.

‘The idea about moving to a new place originated about two years ago. We found our new place at one of our advertisers; the second floor of a store in Nieuwleusen. We thought about the technical layout. Our old studio had analog equipment and a digital studio was our boyhood dream.

We had to work with a limited budget, but we realized that there wasn’t a big difference in purchasing new digital equipment or moving and re-installing the old analog equipment. This has to do with the fact that we couldn’t re-use the old cabling. Besides that, we’re more prepared for the future with digital equipment.

Unfortunately we experienced a few financial setbacks and we were forced to adjourn this project. We had to build up our analog equipment in the new studio as an emergency solution and ran this equipment for another 1,5 years. We managed to get back on track financially and could proceed our plans with the new studio.

During the implementation we talked to Triple Audio about the equipment. We talked about our ideas and they thought along with us.

Eventually we build the studio furniture by ourselves, which was a hard job because the furniture had no corners or straight sides.

The studio now has an Axia IQ 8-fader Main Frame with the 8-fader Expansion frame. It gives us the opportunity add more sources, which means we can easily broadcast reporters (on location) and artist (in the studio). The main frame and expansion frame are built in the furniture.

We chose the Comrex VH2 VoIP hybrid for the our phone line. Besides that, we now have five Shure SM7B microphones which are installed on KM microphone Arm. We use Aeron as our broadcast system.

Besides that, we also installed a LED strip in the studio furniture which serves as microphone signaling.’
